ON THE EVENNESS OF FINNISH ROAD SURFACES AS RELATED TO TRAFFIC ENGINEERING AND ROAD CONSTRUCTION

THE THREE MAIN PURPOSES OF THIS STUDY WERE TO INVESTIGATE: (1) THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ROUGHNESS AND ITS INFLUENCE ON ADDITIONAL LOADING OF THE PAVEMENT, ON RIDING COMFORT, AND ON SAFETY--AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO JUDGE THE INCONVENIENCE CAUSED BY VARIOUS TYPES OF UNEVENNESS, AND THIS IS GRADED ACCORDING TO THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CRITERIA CONSIDERED; (2) THE STATE OF THE FINNISH HIGHWAYS AS REGARDS ROUGHNESS--TO THIS END ALL MAIN HIGHWAYS IN FINLAND WERE MEASURED AND FOUND TO HAVE A TOTAL LENGTH JUST UNDER 7.000 KM, WHICH ACCOUNTS FOR ABOUT TEN PERCENT OF ALL PUBLIC ROADS IN FIN- LAND; AND (3) THE CAUSES OF ROUGHNESS AND ITS VARIATIONS FROM A STATISTICAL POINT OF VIEW AND ALSO IN THE LIGHT OF INDIVIDUAL CASES. NUMEROUS METHODS AVAILABLE FOR MEASURING PAVEMENT PROFILES AND ROUGHNESS ARE MENTIONED, AND SOME GEOMETRIC PROFILOMETERS, AN OPTICAL DEVICE AND TWO DYNAMIC INSTRUMENTS ARE DESCRIBED. NONE OF THE PRESENT METHODS FULFILLS ALL POSSIBLE REQUIREMENTS BUT WHEN IT IS ESSENTIAL TO REVIEW THE STATE OF EVENNESS OF A COMPLETE ROAD NETWORK, THE BEST INSTRUMENTS WOULD BE ROUGHOMETERS AND DYNAMIC PRO- FILOMETERS, BECAUSE OF THEIR SPEED OF OPERATION. IN THIS STUDY THE MAIN EQUIPMENT USED WAS THE "BUMP INTEGRATOR", AN ENGLISH MODIFICATION OF THE ORIGINAL BPR ROUGHOMETER. /TRRL/
