THE CALCULATION AND SIMULATION OF TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS IN PAVEMENTS

WITHIN THE FIELD OF THE CALCULATION OF PAVEMENT TEMPERATURES, SEVERAL APPROACHES TO THIS PROBLEM ARE POSSIBLE. THIS REPORT DESCRIBES FOUR SUCH APPROACHES AND COMPARES THEM WITH RESPECT TO THEIR ACCURACY, ADAPTABILITY AND VOLUME OF INPUT DATA REQUIRED. IN ALL CASES, THE BASIC MATHEMATICS ARE OUTLINED, ASSUMPTIONS QUESTIONED, AND LIMITATIONS DEFINED. A SERIES OF CASE STUDIES INDICATE THAT OF THE FOUR METHODS INVESTIGATED THE FINITE DIFFERENCE METHOD WAS THE MOST GENERALLY ACCEPTABLE, ALTHOUGH ALL HAVE THEIR USES WITHIN THE SPHERE OF PAVEMENT ENGINEERING.
