PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR CONCRETE

VARIOUS COATINGS ARE APPLIED TO THE SURFACES OF CONCRETE SPECIMENS TO PROTECT THEM FROM THE CORROSIVE ACTION OF SALT AND WATER WHEN EXPOSED TO THE EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT. AN ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ALL SUCH COATINGS IS MADE BY A NEW ACCELERATED DRYING AND WETTING METHOD. THE OPTIMUM CONDITIONS FOR TESTING ARE: 3 CYCLES/8 HR. WORKING DAY; 10 ML SEA WATER AS WETTING SOLUTION CYCLE; AND A DRYING TEMPERATURE 45-50 DEG. COMPLETE RUSTING OF REINFORCEMENT IN CONCRETE SPECIMENS OCCURS IN 120 DAYS WITH COATINGS BASED ON CEMENT WHILE COAL TAR BASED COATINGS PREVENT COMPLETE RUSTING EVEN UP TO 180 DAYS. THE REINFORCEMENT OF UNCOATED SPECIMEN SHOWS COMPLETE RUSTING IN 60 DAYS. /AUTHOR/
