OSMOTIC STUDIES AND HYPOTHESIS CONCERNING ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION

AN OSMOTIC CELL TECHNIQUE FOR THE STUDY OF THE CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS OF THE ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION IS DESCRIBED. THE EXPERIMENTAL DATA INCLUDE THE EFFECT UPON OSMOTIC PRESSURE OF (1) THE PERMEABILITY OF THE NEAT CEMENT PASTE MEMBRANE, (2) ALKALI CONCENTRATION, (3) DIFFERENT ALKALIES, (4) CALCIUM HYDROXIDE, (5) PARTICLE SIZE OF AGGREGATE, AND (6) REACTION TEMPERATURE. APPLICATION OF THESE RESULTS HAS LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A HYPOTHESIS CONCERNING THE REACTION OF ALKALIES IN CONCRETE OR MORTAR WITH REACTIVE SILICEOUS AGGREGATES.
