SOME ASPECTS OF TIRE TO ROAD INTERACTIONS

THE IMPORTANCE OF TIRE/ROAD SURFACE INTERACTIONS IN THE PHENOMENON OF WET SKID RESISTANCE IS BRIEFLY REVIEWED. RECENT ADVANCES MADE IN THIS FIELD ARE DISCUSSED AND ILLUSTRATED. RECENTLY DEVELOPED TECHNIQUES EMPLOYED IN THE STUDY OF WET GRIP ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. THE FACTORS GOVERNING WET SKID RESISTANCE ARE DESCRIBED AND EACH IS RELATED TO THE SCALE AT WHICH IT AFFECTS THE TIRE/ROAD INTERACTION. BEFORE A "SAFE" LEVEL OF FRICTION CAN DEVELOP BETWEEN THE TIRE AND ROAD IN WET CONDITIONS AREAS OF "REAL" CONTACT MUST BE PRODUCED. EXAMPLES ARE SHOWN OF HOW THIS MAY BE ACHIEVED WITH CERTAIN AGGREGATES. THE USE OF THE SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE IS EXPLAINED IN THE STUDY OF SURFACE TEXTURES. THE EFFECTS OF ROAD AGGREGATE TEXTURE LEVELS ON THE ABRASION OF THREAD RUBBERS IS ALSO DISCUSSED. THE SEASONAL VARIATION IN SKIDDING RESISTANCE AND ITS EFFECT ON ACCIDENT STATISTICS IS REVIEWED, AND THE MANNER AND SCALE OF TEXTURE CHANGES ILLUSTRATED. THE IMPORTANCE OF MICRO-TEXTURE AT THE MICRON SCALE IS DISCUSSED IN RELATION TO THE CONDITION OF ELASTOHYDRODYNAMIC LUBRICATION. THE EFFECT OF AMBIENT TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS ON THE FRICTION AND ABRASION OF RUBBER IS ALSO MENTIONED. SEE ALSO IRRD ABSTRACTS NOS 50123 AND 203599.
