STUDIES OF SKIDDING RESISTANCE ON ROAD SURFACES - JOURNAL OF RESEARCH

STUDY HAS BEEN MADE OF THE SKIDDING RESISTANCE BETWEEN MOTOR VEHICLE TIRE AND ROAD SURFACE, CHIEFLY IN REGARD TO THE CHANGE IN THE NUMERICAL VALUE OF THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION RELATIVE TO VARIOUS ROADS AND RUNNING CONDITIONS FOR RUBBER TIRES PRESENTLY USED. THE GENERALITY ON SKIDDING BETWEEN ROAD SURFACE AND TIRE IS STATED AND A THEORETICAL ANALYSIS IS MADE OF THE RELATION BETWEEN SKIDDING RESISTANCE AND VEHICULAR MOTION AT THE TIME OF BRAKING. ALSO REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE METHOD OF MEASUREMENT OF SKIDDING RESISTANCE, AND ESPECIALLY, ON THE MEASUREMENT MECHANISM USED IN THE PRESENT STUDY. MEASURED SKIDDING FRICTION VALUES ARE ANALYZED AND THE CORRELATION BETWEEN TEMPERATURE, VELOCITY, AND THE COEFFICIENT OF SKIDDING FRICTION IS DETERMINED. RESEARCH AND ANALYZATION HAVE ALSO BEEN CARRIED OUT ON THE SKIDDING FRICTION RESISTANCE BETWEEN TIRES AND SNOW OR ICE COVERED ROAD SURFACES. REFERENCE LIMIT VALUES OF SKIDDING FRICTION COEFFICIENTS FOR ROAD SURFACES HAVE BEEN DETERMINED, AND MEASURES FOR SKID PREVENTION ARE DESCRIBED.
