ACCELERATED METHODS OF LIFE TESTING PAVEMENTS

THE ADVANTAGES AND DRAWBACKS OF THE METHODS PRESENTLY IN USE FOR PREDICTING THE LIFE OF HIGHWAY PAVEMENTS, INCLUDING METHODS WHICH ARE BASED ON INITIAL RESPONSE, ARE DISCUSSED. THE REPORT DESCRIBES THE TEST METHODS (FULL SCALE HIGHWAY EXPERIMENTS AND ACCELERATED SIMULATION TESTS) AND METHODS FOR ASSESSING THE BEHAVIOR OF PAVEMENTS BOTH IN TERMS OF PAVEMENT DEFORMATION AND CRACKING, AND EVALUATION BASED ON THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF THE PAVEMENT; THE CONCEPT OF PAVEMENT LIFE IS ANALYZED. THE CONCLUSIONS SUMMARIZE NATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAMS IN THIS AREA AND DRAW ATTENTION TO THE CLOSE INTERRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC FACTORS. IT IS PROPOSED THAT MORE COMPREHENSIVE TEST EQUIPMENT THAN THAT PRESENTLY AVAILABLE BE DEVELOPED TO KEEP PACE WITH THE EVOLUTION IN HIGHWAY TRAFFIC AND THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FIELD OF HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION AND PAVEMENT DESIGN. /AUTHOR/
