DESIGN AND EVALUATION OF A SKID RESISTANCE MEASUREMENT SYSTEM.

ALTHOUGH THE SASKATCHEWAN DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS HAD BEEN AWARE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF SKID-RESISTANCE OF PAVEMENTS, IT WAS ONLY IN 1967 THAT A MAJOR EFFORT WAS UNDERTAKEN TO DEVELOP A QUANTITATIVE METHOD OF EVALUATING THIS PAVEMENT CHARACTERISTIC. THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT OF A TWO-WHEELED TRAILER SYSTEM DESIGNED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM SPECIFICATIONS. RESULTS FROM A THREE-YEAR EVALUATION OF THE SYSTEM ARE GIVEN AND SHOW THE RANGE OF SKID NUMBER (SN) OF SASKATCHEWAN PAVEMENTS AND SURFACE TREATMENTS, THE IMPORTANCE OF SN IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS, A CRITICAL SN BELOW WHICH CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE ACTION IS REQUIRED, AND VARIOUS CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE PRACTICES THAT COULD SERIOUSLY LOWER SN. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE GIVEN FOR A CONTINUING PROGRAM OF MONITORING SKID-RESISTANCE SO THAT THE DEVELOPED MEASUREMENT SYSTEM WILL PROVIDE SIGNIFICANT RETURNS TO MOTORISTS.
