ACYCLIC CREEP STUDY OF PAVEMENT MATERIALS

THE CYCLIC CREEP BEHAVIOUR OF PAVEMENT COMPONENTS RELATED TO AN EXPERIMENTAL TEST ROAD WAS STUDIED, AND THE PERMANENT DEFORMATIONS OR RUTTING WERE COMPARED WITH MEASURED FIELD VALUES. AN AUTOMATIC CYCLIC LOADING APPARATUS WAS BUILT AND THREE DIFFERENT MATERIALS, CLAYEY-TILL SUBGRADE, GRANULAR BASE COURSES AND BITUMINOUS-STABILIZED SAND WERE TESTED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THERE IS A POOR CORRELATION BETWEEN THE STRENGTH PARAMETERS AND THE ELASTIC AND CYCLIC CREEP PERFORMANCE OF THE GRANULAR MATERIALS. IS IS RECOMMENDED THAT SOME TYPE OF CYCLIC LOAD TEST IS NECESSARY FOR THE EVALUATION OF THE PERFORMANCE OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT MATERIALS. TESTS WERE ALSO PERFORMED ON BITUMINOUS- STABILIZED SAND AND RESULTS SHOW THAT COHESION, SHEAR, AND MODULUS OF ELASTICITY INCREASE WITH AN INCREASE OF EMULSION CONTENT. IT IS ALSO EVIDENT THAT THE ADDITION OF EMULSION IMPROVES THE SAND PERFORMANCE BY DECREASING THE ELASTIC DEFORMATIONS AND THE CYCLIC CREEP RESULTING FROM AN INCREASE OF MOISTURE CONTENT. FINALLY, THE MAGNITUDES OF RUTTING OF THREE SECTIONS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL TEST ROAD HAVE BEEN PREDICTED BY MEANS OF THE 'STRESS PATH' METHOD AND THE CALCULATED VALUES ARE IN AGREEMENT WITH THE FIELD OBSERVATIONS. /CGRA/
