THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT WAS FOURFOLD: (1) TO DETERMINE PAVEMENT WEAR CAUSED BY STUDDED TIRES; (2) TO EVALUATE THE RESISTANCE OF DIFFERENT PAVEMENT MATERIALS AND TEXTURES, USED IN THE STATES OF WASHINGTON AND IDAHO, TO WEAR CAUSED BY TIRE STUDS; (3) TEST PAVEMENT MATERIALS AND OVERLAYS TO REDUCE TIRE STUD DAMAGE; AND (4) TO STUDY THE EFFECT OF STUDDED TRUCK TIRES AND PAVEMENTS. /FHWA/
