A REVIEW OF ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS IN PAVEMENT DESIGN

THIS REPORT DESCRIBES SOME OF THE FUNDAMENTAL ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS THAT MAY LEAD TO DISTRESS OR FAILURE IN A PAVEMENT STRUCTURE. THE REPORT, PRESENTED IN THE FORM OF A GENERAL REVIEW, EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF THERMAL VARIATIONS AND THEIR EFFECT ON ALL OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLES. THERMAL DATA AVAILABLE FROM MEASUREMENTS TAKEN IN BOTH RIGID AND FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS IN SOUTHERN AFRICA AND THROUGHOUT THE WORLD ARE PRESENTED FOR COMPARISON. THE EFFECT OF THERMAL ENVIRONMENT ON PAVEMENT CRACKING, FATIGUE, DEFLECTION AND MOISTURE MOVEMENTS IS INVESTIGATED IN THE LIGHT OF INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE. A DETAILED CATALOGUE OF THERMAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF PAVEMENT ENGINEERING MATERIALS WAS PREPARED AND SOME SIMPLE MATHEMATICAL RELATIONS BETWEEN THERMALLY ASSOCIATED PARAMETERS ARE PRESENTED (A).
