MEASUREMENT OF MECHANICAL STRESSES USING PIEZOELECTRIC CRYSTALS

THE POSSIBILITY WAS INVESTIGATED OF UTILIZING PIEZOELECTRIC CERAMIC MATERIALS FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF MECHANICAL PULSES GENERATED IN A ROAD SURFACE BY PASSING VEHICULAR TRAFFIC. THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUITABLE PIEZOELECTRIC TRANSDUCERS AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT TO MEASURE VARIOUS PARAMETERS OF HIGHWAY TRAFFIC IS REPORTED. VARIOUS PIEZOELECTRIC MATERIALS WERE EVALUATED AND THE EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE, REPETITIVE LOADING, AND THE ELECTRICAL SIGNALS GENERATED BY PARTICULAR MECHANICAL PULSES WERE STUDIED. A SYSTEM WAS DEVELOPED WHICH WAS BUILT AROUND A PIEZOELECTRIC TRANSDUCER FOR COUNTING THE NUMBER OF VEHICLE AXLES, FOR MEASURING THE WEIGHTS AND VELOCITIES OF VEHICLES, AND FOR CLASSIFYING VEHICLES ACCORDING TO WEIGHT AND NUMBER OF AXLES. INITIAL LABORATORY STUDIES WERE FOLLOWED BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROTOTYPES. FIELD TESTS ON THE FIRST PROTOTYPE DEMONSTRATED THE FEASIBILITY OF USING IT FOR COUNTING VEHICLES IN TRANSIT. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THIS PROTOTYPE AND THE FUNCTIONS IT WAS DESIGNED TO PERFORM. THE OPERATION IS DESCRIBED OF A SECOND PROTOTYPE WHICH WAS DEVELOPED TO COUNT, WEIGH AND CLASSIFY VEHICLES. A DEFINITE STATEMENT ON THE ACCURACY OF THE EQUIPMENT IS NOT POSSIBLE IN VIEW OF THE LIMITED FIELD TESTING. CONCLUSIONS BASED ON THE STUDY ARE PRESENTED AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR FURTHER RESEARCH. THE NEED IS INDICATED FOR THOROUGH FIELD TESTS TO DETERMINE THE BEST DESIGN OF TRANSDUCERS AND ITS INSTALLATION IN THE ROAD BED. FURTHER INFORMATION IS APPENDED ON THE STUDY OF PIEZOELECTRIC CERAMIC ENERGY CONVERSION, THE MEASUREMENT OF STATIC FORCE UTILIZING PIEZOELECTRIC SYSTEMS, AND THE BLOCK DIAGRAM AND CIRCUITS USED IN THE SECOND PROTOTYPE.
