BRAMPTON TEST ROAD: AN APPLICATION OF LAYER ANALYSIS TO PAVEMENT DESIGN

THE BRAMPTON TEST ROAD HAS PROVIDED A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF VERY USEFUL INFORMATION TO EXISTING PAVEMENT STRUCTURAL DESIGN PRACTICE IN ONTARIO, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. THIS INVESTIGATION WAS PRIMARILY CONCERNED WITH THE QUESTION OF WHETHER THEORETICAL, LAYERED SYSTEM METHODS OF ANALYSIS COULD BE APPLIED TO PAVEMENT DESIGN IN ONTARIO. THE MATERIALS CHARACTERIZATION, CLIMATIC, LOAD AND OTHER DATA FROM THE BRAMPTON TEST ROAD WERE USED AS INPUT TO THE ANALYSES, AND THE RESULTS WERE RELATED TO OBSERVED FIELD BEHAVIOR AND PERFORMANCE. IT WAS FOUND THAT PAVEMENT RESPONSE AS PREDICTED BY THE LAYERED SYSTEM ANALYSES COULD BE CLOSELY RELATED TO PERFORMANCE, AND A "SECOND GENERATION" SET OF STRUCTURAL DESIGN RELATIONSHIPS WAS ESTABLISHED. IN ADDITION, IT WAS DEMONSTRATED THAT THE RELATIONSHIPS COULD BE EXPLICITLY PLACED WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF ONTARIO'S PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. A SERIES OF RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE WORK HAVE BEEN PRESENTED. THESE RELATE PRIMARILY TO THE INCORPORATION OF FATIGUE, RUTTING, AND SHRINKAGE FRACTURE SUBSYSTEMS IN DESIGN PRACTICE, TO ADDITIONAL COMPUTERIZATION OF DESIGN PROCEDURES, TO DEVELOPING BETTER OVERLAY DESIGN PROCEDURES, AND TO EXTENDING THE ECONOMIC EVALUATION MODEL. /AUTHOR/
