SHELL USERS' MANUAL FOR ENGINEERING DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

REEF SHELL, WHICH CONSISTS OF DEAD OYSTER SHELL WITH NO CANNERY OR LIVE SHELL, IS COMPOSED OF NEARLY 100% PURE CALCIUM CARBONATE. THIS MANUAL BRINGS TOGETHER INFORMATION ON THE USE OF THIS SHELL AS A CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL, WITH GUIDELINES FOR SOUND PROCEDURES IN SUBGRADE PREPARATION, STOCKPILING, MIXING, COMPACTION AND FINISHING. IN REEF SHELL ASPHALTIC CONCRETE DESIGN, STRIPPING OF REEF SHELL MIXES IS NOT A MAJOR PROBLEM. OPTIMUM ASPHALT CONTENTS RUN ABOUT 6% TO 7% FOR SHELL MIXES. THE SAND PORTION OF THE SAND-REEF SHELL MIXTURE SHOULD GENERALLY NOT EXCEED ABOUT 45%. SPECIFICATIONS ARE DETAILED FOR SAND STABILIZED BASE COURSE AND FOR REEF SHELL ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PAVEMENT. /AUTHOR/
