PROCEEDINGS, ALLERTON PARK CONFERENCE ON SYSTEMS APPROACH TO AIRFIELD PAVEMENTS

THE THREE-DAY PAVEMENT DESIGN CONFERENCE AT ALLERTON PARK, ILLINOIS, BROUGHT TOGETHER PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS, SCIENTISTS AND MATHEMATICIANS FROM MANY BRANCHES OF THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY TO DISCUSS INTERACTIVE PAVEMENT DESIGN PROBLEMS AND SUGGEST METHODOLOGY FOR RESOLVING THEM. PRIOR TO THE 1970'S DESIGN METHODOLOGY FOR AIRFIELD PAVEMENTS REPRESENTED EMPIRICAL AND THEORETICAL EXTRAPOLATION OF PAVEMENT STRENGTH BASED ON STRUCTURAL CONSIDERATIONS AND SLAB SUPPORT, WITH JUDGMENT FACTORS TO COMPENSATE FOR LACK OF TECHNOLOGY AND DIFFERENCES IN USER REQUIREMENTS. WITH THE GREAT WEIGHT RANGE AND VARIATIONS IN GROUND CONTROL CHARACTERISTICS OF MODERN AIRCRAFT, THIS COMBINATION OF JUDGMENT AND THEORY NO LONGER ADEQUATELY SERVES THE PAVEMENT DESIGNER IN MEETING THE USER NEEDS. NEW APPROACHES AND CONCEPTS ARE NEEDED TO BRING PAVEMENT DESIGN UP TO THE LEVEL OF SOPHISTICATION OF AIRCRAFT DESIGN. DESIGN PROBLEMS MUST BE RELATED TO NEEDS OF A WIDE RANGE OF USERS OVER EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME AND SERVICE CONDITIONS. THE PROCEEDINGS FROM THIS CONFERENCE INCLUDE ACTUAL DISCUSSIONS OF THE PARTICIPANTS RECONSTRUCTED FROM TAPE RECORDINGS, AS WELL AS COPIES OF PAPERS PREPARED PRIOR TO THE CONFERENCE MEETING TO SET THE STATE OF THE ART IN VARIOUS DISCIPLINES AND TO STIMULATE DISCUSSION. EXTENSIVE REFERENCE LISTINGS ARE INCLUDED IN THE APPENDICES. /AUTHOR/
