TOWARDS A STANDARD FOR COMPRESSION TESTING MACHINES

SINCE RECENT INVESTIGATIONS HAVE SHOWN THAT CONSIDERABLE VARIATIONS IN CUBE STRENGTH MAY BE OBTAINED WHEN SIMILAR CONCRETE SPECIMENS ARE TESTED ON DIFFERENT MACHINES, A CONCRETE SOCIETY COMMITTEE HAS BEEN SET UP TO CONSIDER THE PREPARATION OF A STANDARD FOR AN ACEPTABLE COMPRESSION TESTING MACHINE. THE RESULTS OF TWO RESEARCH PROGRAMS CONCERNED WITH VARIOUS ASPECTS RELATING TO THE USE OF SUCH MACHINES ARE GIVEN, TOGETHER WITH A REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK IN THIS FIELD. PRELIMINARY RECOMMENDATIONS ARE ALSO GIVEN FOR THE OPERATION OF EXISTING TESTING MACHINES, TO ENABLE MORE COMPARABLE RESULTS TO BE OBTAINED FROM DIFFERENT MACHINES AND LABORATORIES. /AUTHOR/
