A NEW METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE PURE SHEARING STRENGTH OF CONCRETE

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF A NEW METHOD WHICH HAS BEEN DEVISED FOR DETERMINING THE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE IN PURE SHEAR. THE PRINCIPAL REQUIREMENTS FOR WHICH THIS METHOD OF TESTING HAS BEEN DEVISED TO COMPLY ARE: (1) TO INDUCE PURE SHEARING STRESSES AT A CROSS-SECTION OF A SPECIMEN, (2) TO PRODUCE MAXIMUM SHEARING STRESSES AT ALL POINTS ON THE SECTION UNDER CONSIDERATION, (3) TO ACHIEVE A UNIFORM DISTRIBUTION OF SHEARING STRESS OVER THE WHOLE OF THE SECTION SUBJECTED TO PURE SHEAR, WITHOUT ANY CONCENTRATION OF VALUE AND, (4) TO ENSURE THAT THE SPECIMEN ALWAYS RUPTURES AT SECTION UNDER INVESTIGATION. THE METHOD IS CLAIMED TO AVOID THE DISADVANTAGES INHERENT IN METHODS OF TESTING USED PREVIOUSLY. INFORMATION IS GIVEN ON THE ARRANGEMENT OF LOADING, TEST SPECIMENS, AND CURRENT RESEARCH IN PROGRESS. /AUTHOR/
