THIS MANUAL TREATS A RATHER COMPLICATED SUBJECT OF PAVEMENT DESIGN IN A SIMPLE AND DIRECT MANNER. MINIMUM LAYER THICKNESS USING CONVENTIONAL ROAD MATERIALS IS DETERMINED FROM SUBGRADE DESIGN VALUE AND TRAFFIC ANALYSIS DATA; A DESIGN THICKNESS IS SELECTED WHICH WILL SUPPORT HEAVY WHEEL LOADS AND ACCOMMODATE THE NUMBER OF EQUIVALENT 18 KIP SINGLE AXLE LOAD APPLICATIONS EXPECTED DURING THE LIFE OF THE PAVEMENT. REDUCTIONS IN THICKNESS ARE DETERMINED IF LAYERS ARE USED WHICH DEVELOP TENSILE STRENGTH, E.G., A LIME STABILIZED SUBGRADE, ASPHALT STABILIZED BASE, ETC. THE RESULTANT PAVEMENT THICKNESS REDUCTION IN TURN CAN REFLECT CONSIDERABLE SAVINGS IN CONSTRUCTION COSTS. /AUTHOR/
