CALCULATING VERTICAL STRESSES AND RADIAL HORIZONTAL STRAINS IN PAVEMENT SURFACING COURSES /IN PORTUGUESE/

TO CALCULATE VERTICAL STRESSES IN PAVEMENT SURFACINGS IS A MATTER OF PRACTICAL INTEREST FOR THE STUDY OF CRACKING AND FOR PREDICTING THE BEARING CAPACITY OF PAVEMENTS. STRAINS SEEM EASIER TO MEASURE THAN STRESSES IN PAVEMENTS, ESPECIALLY IN BITUMINOUS LAYERS; AS A RESULT STUDIES OF THE FATIGUE CHARACTERISTICS OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS WERE CONDUCTED. THE CALCULATIONS OF THE RADIAL HORIZONTAL STRAINS IN THE PAVEMENT SURFACING COURSE, I. E. THE GREATEST STRAINS THAT OCCUR IN THESE LAYERS, ARE OF PRACTICAL INTEREST FOR PREDICTING THE LIFE TIME OF THESE SURFACINGS AND FOR COMPARATIVE STUDIES. AS THE EXACT CALCULATION OF THESE STRESSES AND STRAINS IS EXPENSIVE IN SYSTEMS HAVING MORE THAN THREE LAYERS, AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO SIMPLIFY THESE CALCULATIONS USING THE PORTUGUESE METHOD OF PAVEMENT DESIGN. RESULTS SO FAR SHOW THAT THIS SIMPLIFIED METHOD WHICH TAKES ACCOUNT OF THE THICKNESSES AND MODULI OF ELASTICITY OF THE LAYERS CAN BE APPLIED TO THE STUDY OF THE STRENGTHENING OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS. /LNEC/TRRL/
