MICROCRACKING OF PLAIN CONCRETE UNDER UNIAXIAL COMPRESSIVE LOADING

FAILURE OF CONCRETE UNDER UNIAXIAL COMPRESSIVE LOADING HAS BEEN STUDIED WITH REFERENCE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNAL CRACKING AND THE PROGRESSIVE FORMATION OF MICROCRACKS. CONCRETE CUBES WERE LOADED BY AXIAL COMPRESSION TO VARIOUS PERCENTAGES OF THEIR ULTIMATE STRENGTH. THIN SLICES WERE TAKEN FROM THE STRAINED SPECIMENS, AND THE GROWTH OF INTERNAL CRACKS IN THEM STUDIED UNDER A MICROSCOPE. THE TOTAL LENGTH AND THE MAXIMUM WIDTH OF BOND, MORTAR AND AGGREGATE CRACKS WERE MEASURED AT VARIOUS STRAINS, AND THE RESULTS ARE DISCUSSED IN THE PAPER. /A/RRL/
