MULTIPHASE ASPECTS OF CONCRETE DRYING SHRINKAGE

A REVIEW IS MADE OF THE THEORIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE STUDY OF CONCRETE DRYING SHRINKAGE. THE FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH THE MEASUREMENT OF CONCRETE STRAINS RESULTING FROM THE ACTION OF DRYING ARE CONSIDERED AND SOME OF THE PROBLEMS DISCUSSED. THE PAPER THAN EXAMINES, IN DETAIL, FACTORS WHICH AFFECT THE SHRINKAGE BEHAVIOR OF THE ACTIVE PHASE - THE CEMENT PASTE, AND THEIR EFFECT ON THE DRYING SHRINKAGE OF CONCRETE. A SYSTEM OF TRILINEAR PLOTTING IS USED TO CLARIFY THE DIVERSITY OF OPINION EXPRESSED IN PRESENT THEORIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE EFFECTS OF MIX PROPORTIONS ON THE DRYING SHRINKAGE OF CONCRETE. IN ADDITION, THE GENERAL THEORIES ARE EXAMINED FROM THE MULTI-PHASE ASPECTS AND IT IS SHOWN THAT MUCH OF THE EARLY WORK PUBLISHED CAN BE RE-ASSESSED TO ADVANTAGE BY THIS APPROACH. /A/RRL/
