STUDY DIRECTED TOWARDS THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A MACHINE TO REMOVE LITTER FROM THE ROADSIDE

BASIC DESIGN CRITERIA FOR A DEVICE FOR MECHANIZED LITTER REMOVAL ARE DISCUSSED. THREE CONCEPTS WERE DERIVED AND CARRIED THROUGH PRELIMINARY DESIGN WHICH INCLUDED MODEL CONSTRUCTION AND EVALUATION. THESE CONCEPTS ARE REFERRED TO AS: MODIFIED HAYRAKE, MODIFIED RAKE - LIFT AND MODIFIED BROOM DUSTPAN. THE MODIFIED BROOM DUSTPAN (MBD) CONCEPT MODEL RECEIVED A HIGHER OVERALL RATING; OVER SOME SECTIONS, 100 PERCENT OF THE ITEMS WERE PICKED UP AND FOR ALL SECTIONS A BETTER THAN 95 PERCENT PICKUP PERCENTAGE WAS ACHIEVED. SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE FOR THE DETAILED DESIGN AND INTEGRATION OF THE PICKUP MECHANISM WITH A CONVEYOR SYSTEM AND DRAWINGS ARE USED TO GUIDE HIGHWAY SHOPS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE MBD CONCEPT.
