TURF METHODS AND MATERIALS FOR MINNESOTA HIGHWAYS

A TURFGRASS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM RESULTED IN FIFTEEN SUPERIOR SELECTIONS FOR DETAILED EVALUATION AND POSSIBLE INTRODUCTION. REESTABLISHMENT OF PRAIRIE SPECIES ON MINIMUM MAINTENANCE ROADSIDES CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY SEEDING. EFFECTIVENESS OF SEEDINGS MAY BE IMPROVED BY MODIFICATION OF PRESENT ROADSIDE MAINTENANCE PRACTICES. MORE RESEARCH WILL BE NEEDED BEFORE SALT AND/OR DROUGHT TOLERENCE GRASS SPECIES CAN BE HANDLED AS SOD. INVESTIGATION INTO VEGETATION CHANGES ON ROADSIDES INDICATED MOWING INTERVAL WAS MORE INFLUENTIAL THAN MOWER TYPE IN AFFECTING SPECIES DISTRIBUTION AND DENSITY, AND THAT GRASSES SHOULD BE SELECTED FOR SPECIFIC ENVIRONMENTS AND MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS.
