AN ASSESSMENT OF THE PERFORMANCE OF DRY LEAN CONCRETE BASES FOR ROADS

DETAILS ARE PRESENTED OF AN ATTEMPT TO ASSESS THE PERFORMANCE OF DRY LEAN CONCRETE BASES FOR ROADS, THE PRINCIPAL SOURCE OF INFORMATION BEING THE REPLIES TO A QUESTIONAIRE CIRCULATED TO ALL COUNTY HIGHWAY AUTHORITIES IN ENGLAND, SCOTLAND AND WALES. THE QUESTIONAIRE GENERATED AN 86 PER CENT RETURN AND THIS TOGETHER WITH THE DETAILED INFORMATION GIVEN BY MANY AUTHORITIES, REFLECTS THE MARKED INTEREST TAKEN IN THIS FORM OF CONSTRUCTION. THE ANALYSIS OF THE REPLIES SHOWS THAT DRY LEAN CONCRETE BASES ARE WIDELY USED AND THAT THE GREAT MAJORITY OF AUTHORITIES ARE SATISFIED WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF ROADS INCORPORATING THIS TYPE OF BASE. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE DEFECTS REPORTED AND, WITHIN THE LIMITATIONS OF THE QUESTIONAIRE WHICH WAS INHERENTLY GENERAL RATHER THAN SPECIFIC, A STUDY IS MADE OF THE EXTENT WHICH THESE HAVE INFLUENCED THE ASSESSMENT OF PERFORMANCE./RRL/A/
