THE PROPOSED MISSOULA BIKEWAY SYSTEM

THIS REPORT PROVIDES GUIDELINES FOR DEVELOPMENT OF SAFE BICYCLE TRAVEL AND PROTECTION OF THE RIGHTS OF BICYCLIST DURING THE CURRENT TRANSITION TO HIGH DENSITY BICYCLE USE IN MISSOULA. THE STUDY INCLUDES A CAREFUL REVIEW OF SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS BEING INITIATED ACROSS AMERICA WHERE THERE HAS BEEN A SIMILAR RETURN TO THE BICYCLE FOR COMMUTER TRANSPORTATION. THE UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA FORESTRY CLASS STUDIED LOCAL CONDITIONS, INCLUDING BICYCLE USE PATTERNS, ROAD AND BRIDGE CONDITIONS, CLIMATE FACTORS, AND EXISTING LAWS AND SAFETY PROGRAMS. THE REPORT INCLUDES A DESCRIPTION OF BIKEWAYS, INVENTORY OF BICYCLE LANES, A MAP OF THE MISSOULA MASTER BIKEWAY PLAN, AND A DESCRIPTION OF PAVEMENT MARKINGS AND SIGNS. THE RESULTS OF A USER SURVEY ARE PRESENTED WHICH INCLUDED INFORMATION ON TRIP GENERATION, ORIGIN AND DESTINATION, AUTOMOBILE OWNERSHIP, AND PREFERENCES AND PRIORITIES OF BICYCLE USERS.
