LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE /IN FRENCH/

A SERIES IS DESCRIBED OF TESTS THAT DETERMINE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE CONCRETE USED IN FRANCE. A COMPARATIVE STUDY IS MADE OF THEIR RESPECTIVE ADVANTAGES WITH REGARD TO WEIGHT, STRENGTH AND DDIMENSIONAL VARIATIONS. RESULTS SHOW THAT THE MECHANICAL STRENGTH OF LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE IS SATISFACTORY, AND ITS THERMAL RESISTIVITY IS HIGHER THAN THAT OF ORDINARY CONCRETE. BY MODIFYING THE COMPOSITION OF THE CONCRETE (SELECTION OF AGGREGATES, FINES CONTENT, CEMENT PROPORTIONING), IT IS POSSIBLE TO BRING ON THE QUALITIES NECESSARY FOR A SPECIFIC TASK. COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH IS IN THE ORDER OF 40 TO 300 BARS FOR DENSITIES BETWEEN 700 AND 1800 KG/CUBIC METER; MECHANICAL STRENGTH IS SUFFICIENT, IN MOST CASES, TO FULFIL ALL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS. SPECIAL MENTION IS MADE OF THE THERMAL INSULATION QUALITY OF LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE ACCORDING TO THE THICKNESS OF APPLICATION, AND OF THE INCREASING USE OF PRECAST LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE PANELS. /LCPC/RRL/
