ROADSIDE VEGETATION AND EROSION CONTROL. PART A: AGRONOMY; PART B: HORTICULTURE

TESTS WERE CONDUCTED FOR EVALUATION OF SERICEA AND CROWNVETCH VARIETIES AT THREE LOCATIONS IN ALABAMA. A TWO- YEAR STUDY OF COMPANION CROPS FOR USE WITH CROWNVETCH SHOWED THAT THE BEST SUMMER ANNUAL WAS CORN, WHILE THE BEST PERENNIAL WAS WEEPING LOVEGRASS. LARGE SCALE TESTS OF GRASS VARIETIES FOR USE IN HIGHWAY MEDIANS SHOWED THAT THE BEST GRASSES FOR USE IN CENTRAL ALABAMA ARE CENTIPEDE, BAHIA, TIFWAY BERMUDA, AND TIFGREEN BERMUDA. BAHIA WAS THE ONLY SUITABLE GRASS FOR SOUTH ALABAMA WHERE COMMON BAHIA IS WIDESPREAD. BAMBOO IS AN EXCELLENT PLANT MATERIAL FOR SCREENS ON AREAS HAVING ADEQUATE, BUT NOT EXCESSIVE, SOIL MOISTURE. MALEIC HYDRAZIDE WAS THE ONLY GROWTH RETARDANT TESTED WHICH GAVE SUPPRESSION OF BAHIAGRASS SEEDHEADS. KUDZU CONTROL TESTS WERE CONDUCTED AT FOUR LOCATIONS IN SOUTH ALABAMA. TORDON WAS THE MOST EFFECTIVE HERBICIDE TESTED GIVING COMPLETE INITIAL KILL AT RATES AS LOW AS 2 OUNCES PER ACRE. STUDY WAS CONDUCTED FOR SELECTING SPECIES OF TREES, SHRUBS AND VINES THAT ARE ADAPTABLE FOR USE ON ALABAMA HIGHWAYS: (1) TO DETERMINE THE ADAPTABILITY AND SURVIVAL OF SELECTED WOODY PLANTS ALONG ROADSIDES IN ALABAMA, (2) TO COLLECT, CHARACTERIZE, PROPAGATE AND ESTABLISH NATIVE SPECIES IN STOCK BLOCKS AT AUBURN UNIVERSITY AND IN SELECTED LOCATIONS ON THE ROADSIDE, AND (3) TO EVALUATE THE FEASIBILITY OF USING CHEMICALS FOR THE CONTROL OF WEEDS AROUND ESTABLISHED HIGHWAY PLANTINGS. HERBICIDE COMBINATIONS WERE FOUND TO BE TREATMENTS OF THE FUTURE FOR MORE EFFECTIVE WEED CONTROL. TO DEVELOP A VERSATILE HERBICIDE PROGRAM, ROADSIDE MAINTENANCE MEN SHOULD BE EQUIPPED TO PROVIDE BOTH SPRAY AND GRANULAR FORMULATIONS. TIMING OF HERBICIDE APPLICATION IS OFTEN THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL HERBICIDE PROGRAM.
