THE FROST RESISTANCE OF YOUNG CONCRETE /IN GERMAN/

THE DEVELOPMENT IS REPORTED OF A SHRINKAGE MEASURING INSTRUMENT WHICH ENABLES THE FROST PROTECTION PERIOD OF TIME FOR YOUNG CONCRETE (POINT OF TIME AT WHICH THE FROST PROTECTION MEASURES BECOME UNNECESSARY) TO BE ASCERTAINED EASILY, WITHOUT THE CONCRETE COMPOSITION AND CEMENT PROPERTIES HAVING TO BE KNOWN. THE ONLY THING REQUIRED IS A DEFINITION OF THE ABSOLUTE WATER CONTENT OF THE FRESH CONCRETE. IF THE TUBE OF THE SHRINKAGE MEASURING APPARATUS SHOWS THAT THE SHRINKAGE VALUE HAS AMOUNTED TO APPROXIMATELY 4% OF THE MIXING WATER, THEN THE YOUNG CONCRETE CAN WITH CERTAINTY BE DECLARED FROST-RESISTANT. IF THE HARDENED CONCRETE IS ALSO RESISTANT TO FREQUENT FREEZING-THAWING CYCLES OR TO ATTACK FROM THAWING SALTS, IT MUST STILL SATISFY FURTHER CONDITIONS. TESTS ARE CURRENTLY IN PROGRESS IN THE MAIN LABORATORY OF PERLMOOSER ZEMENTWERKE A.G. TO FOLLOW THE STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT OF CONCRETE USING THE SHRINKAGE MEASUREMENT APPARATUS. /RRL/
