STUDIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE JEMEZ TERRESTRIAL PRECIPITATION MEASUREMENT SYSTEM

THE PRECIPITATION MEASUREMENT SYSTEM OF THE JEMEZ ATMOSPHERIC WATER RESOURCES RESEARCH PROJECT HAS BEEN ANALYZED IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS. INCLUDED IN THIS REPORT ARE A NUMBER OF SCHEMES OTHER THAN THE NONPARAMETRIC STATISTICAL EVALUATION METHOD USED BY THE JEMEZ PROJECT. THE RESEARCH HAS ATTEMPTED TO DETERMINE THE AMOUNT OF MOISTURE REACHING THE GROUND UNDER VARIOUS CONDITIONS OF NATURAL PRECIPITATION AS WELL AS ARTIFICIALLY INDUCED PRECIPITATION. SOME ANALYSES HAVE USED HISTORICAL RAIN GAGE DATA (BEFORE THE WINTER SEASON OF 1968-1969): WINTER PREDICTION MODEL ESTIMATES VERSUS REAL PRECIPITATION EVENTS, TIME SERIES ANALYSIS FOR MONTHLY PRECIPITATION AND RUNOFF, AND DIURNAL VARIATIONS OF BACKGROUND OROGRAPHIC PRECIPITATION. MOST OF THE ANALYSES HAVE ATTEMPTED TO DETERMINE THE ADEQUACY AND RELIABILITY OF EACH MEASUREMENT OF THE JEMEZ TERRESTRIAL PRECIPITATION SYSTEM. THEY WERE: SNOW BOARD AND SNOW POLE RELIABILITY, EVALUATION OF THE SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE SNOW COURSES, OPTIMIZATION OF THE FY 1970 PRECIPITATION STATIONS, DIURNAL VARIATIONS OF HOURLY PRECIPITATION, BACKGROUND PRECIPITATION PATTERNS VERSUS 700MB WIND DIRECTION, AND THE AREAL COVERAGE OF SUMMER STORM PRECIPITATION. THE NON-STATISTICAL METHODS USED TO DETERMINE INDICATIONS OF THE SEEDING EFFECTS HAVE BEEN: (1) ISOYHETAL EXAMINATION OF SEEDING EFFECT, (2) STORM ALONG WITH THE METEOROLOGICAL ANALYSES, ASSOCIATED WITH SOURCE OF PRECIPITATION ANOMOLIES. MOST OF THESE STUDIES, SEEDING EFFECT AND NATURAL PRECIPITATION HAVE INDICATED RESULTS THAT WERE NOT OBVIOUS OR EMPIRICALLY DETECTED BEFORE. ADDITIONAL WORK ON EACH OF THE STUDIES OR SCHEMES INCLUDED IN THIS REPORT SHOULD BE CONTINUED IN CONJUNCTION WITH TESTING NUMERICAL OROGRAPHIC PRECIPITATION MODELS ON THE JEMEZ DATA SET. /AUTHOR/
