EFFECT OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE AS AN ADMIXTURE IN PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE

RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED TO FIND: (1) THE EFFECT OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE ON THE RATE OF HYDRATION OF THE CONSTITUENT MINERALS OF PORTLAND CEMENT TAKEN SEPARATELY, (2) THE EFFECT OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE ON THE RATE OF HYDRATION OF PORTLAND CEMENT, (3) THE CHARACTER OF THE HYDRATION PRODUCTS WHEN THE PORTLAND CEMENT IS SET UP IN CALCIUM CHLORIDE SOLUTION, PARTICULARLY AS TO WHETHER THE CALCIUM CHLORIDE COMBINES CHEMICALLY WITH ANY PORTION OF THE CEMENT, (4) WHAT OTHER EFFECTS CALCIUM CHLORIDE HAS ON PORTLAND CEMENT OR ITS HYDRATION PRODUCTS, (5) THE DIFFERENCE DURING THE CURING PERIOD IN CHANGE IN MOISTURE CONTENT BETWEEN PLAIN CONCRETE AND CALCIUM CHLORIDE ADMIXED CONCRETE, AND (6) THE DIFFERENCE DURING THE CURING PERIOD IN VOLUMETRIC CHANGES BETWEEN PLAIN CONCRETE AND CALCIUM CHLORIDE ADMIXED CONCRETE. THE RATES OF HYDRATION TESTS SHOW THAT CALCIUM CHLORIDE RETARDS THE HYDRATION OF THE TRICALCIUM ALUMINATE, AND TENDS TO KEEP THE HYDRATED MATERIAL IN AN AMORPHOUS OR FINELY CRYSTALLINE CONDITION. CALCIUM CHLORIDE ACCELERATES THE HYDRATION OF THE TRICALCIUM SILICATE, BUT ONLY SLIGHTLY ACCELERATES THE HYDRATION OF THE BETA DICALCIUM SILICATE, MOST OF THE ACCELERATION TAKING PLACE IN THE FIRST FOURTEEN DAYS. CALCIUM CHLORIDE ACCELERATES THE HYDRATION OF PORTLAND CEMENT UP TO THREE DAYS, AND AFTER ABOUT THIRTY DAYS. CALCIUM CHLORIDE TENDS TO MAKE A SILICATE JELL MUCH LESS PERMEABLE. THE RELATIVE TOTAL SHRINKAGE OF PLAIN CONCRETE AND CONCRETE TREATED WITH CALCIUM CHLORIDE WILL BE LARGELY DEPENDENT UPON THE HUMIDITY AND TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS PREVAILING DURING THE FIRST DAY OF CURING. THE CHANGE IN LENGTH OF CONCRETE TREATED WITH CALCIUM CHLORIDE IS LESS AFFECTED BY TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY DURING THE FIRST DAY THAN THE CHANGE IN LENGTH OF PLAIN CONCRETE.
