MASS CONCRETE TESTS IN LARGE CYLINDERS

MASS CONCRETE RESEARCH CONDUCTED BY THE BUREAU OF RECLAMATION IN THE DENVER LABORATORIES WAS CONDUCTED IN CONNECTION WITH THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF BOULDER DAM. TESTS WERE MADE ON CYLINDERS VARYING IN SIZE FROM 2 X 4 TO 36 X 72 IN. TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS FACTORS ON COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH, YOUNG'S MODULUS AND POISSON'S RATIO. DATA OBTAINED WERE USED TO EVALUATE THE FOLLOWING VARIABLE FACTORS IN TERMS OF INDICATED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH, ELASTIC PROPERTIES AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: (1) SIZE OF TEST CYLINDER, (2) MAXIMUM SIZE OF AGGREGATE, AND (3) WET- SCREENING. MATERIALS AND METHOD OF TESTS AND DATA OBTAINED ARE DESCRIBED AND DISCUSSED. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE INDICATED STRENGTH OF THE SAME CONCRETE WHEN TESTED IN VARIOUS SIZES OF TEST CYLINDERS DECREASES AS THE SIZE OF SPECIMEN IS INCREASED. THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF CONCRETES ARE NOT AFFECTED BY THE SIZE OF TEST CYLINDER. THE CEMENT REQUIRED FOR CONCRETES OF EQUAL SLUMP AND WATER-CEMENT RATIO INCREASES AS THE MAXIMUM SIZE OF AGGREGATE IS DECREASED. THE CEMENT EFFICIENCY DECREASES AS THE SIZE OF AGGREGATE IS DECREASED WHEN THE CONSISTENCY IN SIZE OF TEST CYLINDERS ARE MAINTAINED CONSTANT. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STRENGTH AND CEMENT-WATER RATIO BY WEIGHT IS ESSENTIALLY A STRAIGHT LINE VARIATION. THE EFFECT OF MAXIMUM SIZE OF AGGREGATE ON THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF CONCRETES HAS NOT BEEN ESTABLISHED COMPLETELY. THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY OF CONCRETES INCREASES AS THE STRENGTH IS INCREASED. THE VARIATIONS FOR YOUNG'S MODULUS WITH VARYING WATER-CEMENT RATIO OR AGE ARE SIMILAR TO THE VARIATIONS FOR COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH. WET SCREENING MASS CONCRETE DOES NOT MATERIALLY AFFECT THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH NOR THE SLUMP OF CONCRETE AS COMPARED WITH THE CONSISTENCY OF THE ORIGIONAL FULL MIX. THE EFFECT OF CURING CONDITION ON THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE DEPENDS SOMEWHAT UPON THE TYPE OF CEMENT.
