ANALYSIS AND CONTROL OF ADMIXTURES BY INFRA-RED AND ULTRA- VIOLET SPECTROMETRY

COMPOUNDS, WHEN SUBJECTED TO INFRA-RED OR ULTRA-VIOLET RADIATION, ARE LIABLE TO ABSORB CERTAIN RADIATIONS WHICH ARE CHARACTERISTIC OF THEIR CHEMICAL COMPOSITION. THESE RADIATIONS CONSTITUTE THE SPECTRUM OF THE SUBSTANCE BEING EXAMINED. THIS FACT IS ESPECIALLY INTERESTING FOR THE ANALYSIS OF ORGANIC SUBSTANCES WHICH FORM PART OF CONCRETE ADMIXTURES, THE SPECTRA OBTAINED CAN BE CONSIDERED AS IDENTITY CARDS OF THESE ADMIXTURES AND THEREBY SERVE AS A GUARANTEE WHEN THE CONSISTENCY OF PRODUCTION OF A PRODUCT IS CONTESTED. BUT IF THE METHOD IS TO HAVE A CERTAIN RIGOUR, IT IS NECESSARY TO ANALYZE THE ADMIXTURE INTO ITS VARIOUS CONSTITUENTS AT THE SAME TIME, FOR THE SPECTRUM OF COMPLEX MIXTURE IS PRACTICALLY ILLEGIBLE. FOR THIS REASON, TWO COMPLEMENTARY ASPECTS ARE ENVISAGED IN THIS ARTICLE: THE IMMEDIATE ANALYSIS OF THE ADMIXTURE ITSELF ON THE ONE HAND, AND ITS STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS BY SPECTROMETRY ON THE OTHER HAND. THIS ANALYSIS IS COMPLEMENTED BY VERY IMPORTANT ANCILLARY CONTROLS RELATING TO THE UTILIZATION OF THE ADMIXTURES: CHLORIDE CONTENT (IN THE CASE OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE, CHLORIDES MUST BE ABSENT) AND SUGAR CONTENT. THIS CONSISTITUTES THE L.C.P.C. METHOD OF IDENTIFICATION OF CONCRETE ADMIXTURES WHICH IS USED IN FRANCE FOR THE ACCEPTANCE OF THESE PRODUCTS IN THE PUBLIC WORKS SECTOR. /BLLRP&C/
