CHAIN LINK FENCE VEHICLE ARRESTING SYSTEM

THREE TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON A CHAIN LINK VEHICLE ARRESTING SYSTEM. EACH END OF A CHAIN LINK FENCE WAS ATTACHED TO A "METAL BENDER" ENERGY ABSORBER. THE FENCE WAS STRETCHED ACROSS A MEDIAN TYPE DITCH 58 FT WIDE WITH 12:1 SIDE SLOPES. STANDARD THD STEEL DELINEATOR POSTS WERE USED TO HOLD THE FENCE TO THE GROUND CONTOUR. DURING THE FIRST TEST THE "METAL BENDER" TAPES PLAYED OUT ABOUT 6 FT EACH AND PARTED. THE TAPE HAD BOUND AROUND A CENTER AXLE. A BRASS BUSHING WAS PLACED BETWEEN THE TAPE AND AXLE AND THE TEST, A HEAD-ON, WAS RE-RUN. THE FINAL TWO TESTS WERE CONDUCTED HEAD-ON AND AT AN ANGLE OF 30 DEGREES WITH A LINE NORMAL TO THE SYSTEM. BOTH OF THE FINAL TESTS WERE SUCCESSFUL.
