REPORT ON TESTS AND OBSERVATIONS MADE OVER A PERIOD OF THIRTY YEARS (1934-1964) ON SAMPLES OF MORTARS AND CONCRETE, OF WHICH A LARGE NUMBER WERE PERMANENTLY SUBMERGED IN THE NORTH SEA AT OSTENDE

BECAUSE OF THE RAPID DETERIORATION OF THE CONCRETE IN THE LOCKS OF THE FISHING BASIN OF OSTENDE, A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS ON CONCRETE WERE UNDERTAKEN. TEN DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONCRETE, FORMED INTO MORTARS WITH A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT ADMIXTURES, WERE MADE INTO SPECIMENS, BOTH REINFORCED AND UNREINFORCED. LABORATORY TESTS WERE PERFORMED. SOME OF THE SPECIMENS WERE SUBMERGED IN THE SEA WATER. SAMPLES WERE REMOVED AT FOUR YEARS, ELEVEN YEARS AND THIRTY YEARS. THE RESULTS OF EXTENSIVE TESTING ARE GIVEN, AND PICTURES OF THE SPECIMENS ARE SHOWN.
