THE FROST RESISTANCE OF YOUNG CONCRETE

IN WINTER CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE IT MAY, IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES, BE IMPORTANT TO KNOW THE TIME WHEN THE FROST PROTECTION PRECAUTIONS NECESSARY FOR YOUNG CONCRETE CAN BE DISPENSED WITH. THE DETERMINATION OF THE LENGTH OF TIME DURING WHICH SUCH PRECAUTIONS ARE NECESSARY HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF MANY INVESTIGATIONS AND RESEARCHES. THE RESULTS OF THIS WORK ARE IN PART EMBODIED IN THE RILEM DIRECTIVES FOR WINTER CONCRETING. THE PRESENT ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CONTRACTION MEASURING APPARATUS WHICH ENABLES THE FROST PROTECTION PERIOD FOR YOUNG CONCRETE TO BE DETERMINED IN A SIMPLE MANNER WITHOUT REQUIRING THE COMPOSITION OF THE CONCRETE AND THE PROPERTIES OF THE CEMENT TO BE KNOWN. ALL THAT IS NEEDED IS A DETERMINATION OF THE ABSOLUTE WATER CONTENT OF THE FRESHLY MIXED CONCRETE. WHEN THE GRADUATED BURETTE OF THE CONTRACTION MEASURING APPARATUS SHOWS THAT THE CONTRACTION HAS ATTAINED A VALUE CORRESPONDING TO ABOUT 4% OF THE MIXING WATER, THE YOUNG CONCRETE CAN WITH CERTAINTY BE CONSIDERED FROST-RESISTANT. IF THE HARDENED CONCRETE IS REQUIRED TO BE ABLE TO WITHSTAND FREQUENT ALTERNATIONS OF FREEZING AND THAWING OR BE RESISTANT TO ATTACK BY DE-ICING SALTS, IT WILL OF COURSE HAVE TO SATISFY ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS. AT PRESENT, TESTS ARE IN PROGRESS IN THE MAIN LABORATORY OF THE PERLMOOSER ZEMENTWERKE AG WITH A VIEW TO STUDYING THE STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT OF CONCRETE WITH THE AID OF THE CONTRACTION MEASURING APPARATUS.
