THE EFFECT OF MAGNESIUM OXIDE ON THE PROPERTIES OF PORTLAND CEMENT

MAGNESIUM OXIDE HAS CLEARLY NOTICEABLE EFFECT ON THE COLOUR AND THE HYDRAULIC PROPERTIES OF PORTLAND CEMENT. THE COLOURS OF THE VARIOUS PORTLAND CEMENTS ARE DARKEST WHEN THE MAGNESIUM OXIDE CONTENT IS BETWEEN 1 AND 2%. THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS OF THESE CEMENTS VARY CHIEFLY WITH THE MAGNESIUM OXIDE AND THE TRICALCIUM SULFATE CONTENT. THE COLOUR OF TETRACALCIUM ALUMINATE FERRITE CONTAINING MAGNESIUM OXIDE BECOMES DARKEST FOR 4.5-6 MOL % (1.5-2.0% BY WEIGHT) OF MAGNESIUM OXIDE. THIS IS IN AGREEMENT WITH THE LIMITS OF THE SOLID SOLUTION OF MAGNESIUM OXIDE IN TETRACALCIUM ALUMINATE FERRITE. THE COLOURS OF 2 CALCIUM OXIDE (AL, FE) TRIOXIDE, WHICH CONTAIN MAGNESIUM OXIDE IN SOLID SOLUTION, REMAIN UNCHANGED EVEN IF THE FERROUS OXIDE/ALUMINUM OXIDE RATIO IS ALTERED. THE LIMIT OF ABSORPTION OF MAGNESIUM OXIDE IN SOLID SOLUTION IN TRICALCIUM ALUMINATE IS AT 1 MOL % (APPROX. 0.4% BY WEIGHT) FOR THE SUBSTITUTION OF CALCIUM OXIDE. /AUTHOR/
