INFLUENCE OF REINFORCING DETAILS ON YIELD LINE PATTERN AND ULTIMATE LOAD-CARRYING CAPACITY OF REINFORCED CONCRETE SLABS

THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS STUDY WERE TO DETERMINE THE INFLUENCE OF REINFORCING DETAILS ON THE YIELD LINE PATTERN AND THE LOAD-CARRYING CAPACITY OF ELEMENTARY REINFORCED CONCRETE SLABS, AND TO TEST THE APPLICABILITY OF THE YIELD LINE THEORY TO THE EVALUATION OF THESE INFLUENCES. A TOTAL OF SEVEN SIMPLY SUPPORTED SLABS AND VARIOUS ARRANGEMENTS OF BENT BARS AND CORNER REINFORCEMENTS, WERE CAST AND TESTED UNDER INIFORM LOADS TO FLEXURAL FAILURE. TWO ONE-WAY SLAB STRIPS, 66 BY 12 BY 1 IN. AND 60-IN. SPAN, SERVED TO DETERMINE THE ULTIMATE MOMENT. RIGOROUS YIELD LINE ANALYSIS, WHICH TOOK INTO CONSIDERATION THE EFFECTS OF COMMON INHOMOGENEITIES AND ANISOTROPIES IN THE SLAB REINFORCEMENT, WAS PERFORMED FOR ELEMENTARY GEOMETRIES AND BOUNDARY CONDITIONS. THEORETICAL PREDICTIONS WERE COMPARED WITH EXPERIMENTALLY OBTAINED RESULTS. THE RESULTS OF THE FEW TESTS VERIFY THE THEORETICAL CONCLUSION THAT REINFORCING DETAILS, THOUGH USUALLY DISREGARDED IN YIELD LINE ANALYSIS, MAY HAVE A SIGNIFICANT EFFECT UPON THE CRACK PATTERN AND THE ULTIMATE LOAD-CARRYING CAPACITY OF SLABS, AND MAY CAUSE VARIATION OF AS MUCH AS 30% IN THE FLEXURAL STRENGTH OF THE SLABS. YIELD LINE ANALYSIS PROCEDURES ARE APPARENTLY WELL SUITED TO EVALUATE THESE INFLUENCES, AT LEAST FOR THE CASE OF ELEMENTARY SLABS. /AUTHOR/
