HOW TO BREAK 6,000 PSI CONCRETE

MASSIVE CONCRETE POURED IN 1900 IN THE PETERBOROUGH, ONT., LIFT LOCK RESISTED NORMAL DEMOLITION METHODS. DOMINION BRIDGE CREWS TRIED SEVERAL METHODS AND FINALLY ADOPTED A SCHEME OF DRILLING HOLES IN ROWS, THEN BREAKING WITH JACKS. EXPLOSIVES COULD NOT BE USED BECAUSE OF THE RISK OF UNFORESEEN DAMAGE TO THE HISTORICAL MONUMENT. THE CONCRETE STRENGTH WAS INDICATED AT AN AVERAGE OF 5.953 PSI.
