WINTER CONCRETING IN ICELAND

FROST-DAMAGED CONCRETE IS NOT COMMON IN ICELAND IN SPITE OF THE SHARP OSCILLATIONS IN TEMPERATURE. ICELANDERS BUILD ALMOST SOLELY FROM CONCRETE CAST ON SITE, REINFORCED OR NONREINFORCED. IN WINTER IT IS THE PRACTICE TO HEAT EVERY CUBIC YARD OF CONCRETE THAT GOES OUT FROM THE PLANT. AIR ENTRAINANTS ARE STANDARD. EXTENSIVE USE IS MADE OF TYPE 3, AND CALCIUM CHLORIDE IS ADDED TO TYPE 1 OR TYPE 3 CEMENT TO BOOST THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH UP TO 30 PERCENT. A FULLY AUTOMATIC BATCHING AND MIXING PLANT, A FLEET OF NINE TRUCK MIXERS, 4 MIXER MOBILES AND TWELVE TRUCKS CARRY MIXED OR DRY BATCH CONCRETE IN STEEL CONTAINERS.
