EXPANSIVE CEMENTS ARE CEMENTS CONTAINING A CONSTITUENT (OR CONSTITUTENTS) WHICH, IN NORMAL PROCESSES OF HYDRATION AND SETTING, UNDERGO INCREASES IN VOLUME. SMALL INCREASES IN VOLUME MAY BE PROVIDED TO TEND TO COMPENSATE FOR DECREASES DUE TO SHRINKAGE. LARGER POTENTIAL INCREASES MAY BE PROVIDED IN CONCRETE PLACED UNDER RESTRAINT TO DEVELOP A PRESTRESSED CONDITION (SELF-STRESSING OR CHEMICAL PRE- STRESSING).
