WATERPROOFING STRAIN GAGES ON REINFORCING BARS IN CONCRETE EXPOSED TO THE SEA

THE MOUNTING AND WATERPROOFING OF STRAIN GAUGES FOR USE ON REINFORCING BARS BURIED IN CONCRETE BREAKWATER CAISSONS UNDER A HEAD OF 20 FT OF SALT WATER IS DESCRIBED. THE GAUGES WERE MOUNTED ON THE DEFORMED STEEL BARS USING A TWO-COM- PONENT EPOXY CEMENT AFTER THE RIBS HAD BEEN FILED AWAY. LAYERS OF THREE MATERIALS-EPOXY RESIN, SILICONE RESIN, AND MICROCRYSTALLINE WAX WERE USED FOR WATERPROOFING, EACH LAYER OVERLAPPING THE PREVIOUS ONE. FOR PHYSICAL PROTECTION A 4-IN LENGTH OF STEEL PIPE WAS PLACED OVER THE GAUGE AND THE PIPE WAS FILLED WITH WAX, MORE THAN 90 PER CENT OF THE GAUGES REMAINED ACTIVE OVER A 9-MONTH PERIOD. /RRL/A/
