MEASURING CONCRETE DENSITY BY GAMMA RAY TRANSMISSION

THE EQUATION RELATING COUNT RATE R WITH SPECIMEN DENSITY P THICKNESS X, AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION, FOR AN APPARATUS WITH A COLLIMATED CESSIUM-137 SOURCE AND SODIUM IODIDE SCINTIL- LATION COUNTER, IS SHOWN TO BE R- RO EXP WHERE X DEPENDS UPON THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF THE SPECIMEN, AND NA IS AVOGADROS NUMBER. USING THIS EQUATION, ACCURATE CORRECTION CAN BE MADE TO THE COUNT RATE READING FOR CHANGES IN THICKNESS AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF A SPECIMEN. FOR THE APPARATUS DESCRIBED HERE, IT WAS FOUND BY EXPERIMENT AND CALCULATION THAT 90 PER CENT OF THE READING WAS DUE TO CONCRETE WITHIN A RADIUS OF 0.4 IN. OF THE CENTER-LINE. ANALYSIS OF THE ERRORS IN THE METHOD SHOWED THAT THE ACCURACY OF THE READING WAS LIMITED ONLY BY THE HETERO- GENEITY OF THE CONCRETE SPECIMEN. /RRL/A/
