PROTECTION OF CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS

FINDINGS ARE REPORTED ON INVESTIGATIONS OF CORROSION IN REINFORCING STEEL BARS OF A BRIDGE DECK. METHODS FOR REPAIRING THE SPALLED AREAS ARE DESCRIBED. REFERENCE IS MADE TO A COAL TAR EPOXY SEALING COMPOUND AND A SURFACING, CONSISTING OF A 1 1/2-IN SPECIAL NEOPRENE-ASPHALT WEARING SURFACE. THE COAL TAR EPOXY SEALING COMPOUND PREVENTS WATER OR SALINE SOLUTION FROM REACHING THE CONCRETE DECK. THIS IS SAID TO BE THE ONLY METHOD THAT HAD STOOD THE TEST OF TIME ON THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE, AFTER REMOVING AND REPLACING ANY SERIOUSLY DAMAGED DECK AREAS. /RRL/
