INFLUENCE OF LIMESTONE GRAVEL IN CONCRETE

THE INFLUENCE OF LIMESTONE AGGREGATES ON THE PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE IS DESCRIBED. THE CONCLUSIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS: (1) AVERAGE PERCENTAGE OF LIMESTONE - THE HIGHEST PROPORTION OF LIMESTONE (50 PER CENT ON AVERAGE) IS FOUND IN FINE AGGREGATE VARYING IN SIZE BETWEEN 6.3 AND 10 MM, WHEREAS THE PERCENTAGE DROPS TO 25 PER CENT FOR GRAVEL VARYING IN SIZE FROM 16 TO 25 MM AND DOWN TO 15 PER CENT AND BELOW FOR SAND (2) RETENTION WATER - THE HIGHER THE PERCENTAGE OF LIMESTONE (2.5 PER CENT WEIGHT PERCENTAGE FOR AGGREGATE CONTAINING 90 PER CENT LIMESTONE) THE GREATER THE AMOUNT OF RETENTION WATER IN SILICO-CALCAREOUS AGGREGATES. IT IS THEREFORE NECESSARY TO INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF TEMPERING WATER FOR TYPES OF CONCRETE CONTAINING AGGREGATE OF THIS NATURE (3) MECHANICAL STRENGTH - GIVEN A UNIFORM PLASTICITY AND TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE PERCENTAGE OF LIMESTONE, THE VARIATIONS IN COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH ARE VERY SMALL, WHILE IN TENSILE STRENGTH, THEY FAVOR LIMESTONE AGGREGATES (4) MODULUS OF ELASTICITY - THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY TENDS TO DECREASE WHEN THE LIMESTONE PERCENTAGE INCREASES - SHRINKAGE - THE PRESENCE OF LIMESTONE IN AGGREGATES INCREASES SHRINKAGE, THIS INCREASE BEING SO GREAT THAT, GIVEN AN EQUIVALENT PLASTICITY, THE PROPORTION OF WATER HAS TO BE INCREASED - GELIVITY - FROST DOES NOT APPEAR TO CAUSE MORE DAMAGE TO CONCRETE MADE WITH GRAVEL CONTAINING 56 PER CENT LIMESTONE THAN TO CONCRETE MADE WITH GRAVEL CONTAINING 2 PER CENT LIMESTONE. IN GENERAL, IF PRECAUTIONS ARE TAKEN, IT IS POSSIBLE TO MAKE VERY GOOD CONCRETE WITH AGGREGATES CONTAINING LIMESTONE. /RRL/
