PROTECTION OF REINFORCED CONCRETE TRUSSES

IN STUDYING THE RISK OF CORROSION TO REINFORCEMENT IN CONCRETE, TWO ASPECTS MUST BE CONSIDERED' THE DIRECTLY AGGRESSIVE MEDIA WHICH REACT ON THE STEEL, AND THE INDIRECT MEDIA WHICH BY ALTERATION OF THE CONCRETE DUE TO DECALCIFICATION AND CRACKING, ENCOURAGE THE FINAL ATTACK ON THE REINFORCMENT. THESE TWO ASPECTS OF AGGRESSIVE MEDIA ARE EXAMINED AND THEIR METHOD OF ATTACK EXPLAINED. THE FORMS, PROCESSES AND CONDITIONS OF ATTACK ON THE REINFORCEMENT ARE SET OUT, DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN CHEMICAL AND ELECTROLYTIC CORROSION. BUT THE AUTHOR INSISTS ON THE NATURAL PROTECTION CONFERRED TO THE REINFORCEMENT PASSIVE FILM WHICH NORMALLY EXISTS ON THE STEEL-CONCRETE INTERFACE AND WHICH DEPENDS ON THE TYPE OF CEMENT USED. RISK OF CORROSION TO THE REINFORCEMENT BY CALCIUM CHLORIDE IS ANALYSED IN TERMS OF THE NATURE OF THE WORK AND THE CONCENTRATION OF THE CHLORIDE. THE POSSIBILITIES OF USING INHIBITORS OF CHEMICAL OR ELECTROCHEMICAL CORROSION OF TRUSSES ARE CONSIDERED, AFTER REVIEWING THE PRESENT KNOWLEDGE ON THE MECHANICAL ACTION OF ANODIC AND CATHODIC INHIBITORS, THE STUDY OF AMINE TYPE INHIBITORS IS SUGGESTED. FROM HIS ANALYSIS OF THE FACTORS OF CORROSION OF REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES, THE AUTHOR REFERS TO THOSE POINTS WHICH HE FEELS NEED TO BE DISCUSSED WITH REFERENCE TO REINFORCED CONCRETE REGULATION 60 CONCERNING THE PROTECTION OF STRUCTURES AND SUGGESTS ALTERATIONS IN THE THICKNESS OF SURFACE CONCRETE. /CPC/RRL/
