FIBER REINFORCEMENT OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES
THE LABORATORY WORK DESCRIBED WAS UNDERTAKEN TO INCORPORATE HIGH TENSILE STRENGTH GLASS FIBERS INTO A SAND ASPHALT MIXTURE IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE RESISTANCE TO CRACKING OF THE RESULTING COMPOSITE. REINFORCEMENT INCLUDED RANDOMLY ORIENTED CHOPPED FIBERGLASS ROVING AND YARN, CONTINUOUS STRAND FIBERGLASS MAT AND CONTINUOUS STRAND FIBERGLASS YARN. A BRIEF REVIEW OF PERTINENT FEATURES OF FIBER REINFORCEMENT OF CONTINUOUS MATRICES IS PRESENTED. EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF FIBER REINFORCEMENT WAS MADE BY UTILIZING TIME-TO-RUPTURE TESTS WITHIN THE THEORY OF BREAKING KINETICS. THE RATIO OF TEST SPECIMENS SURVIVING AT ANY TIME TO THE TOTAL TEST POPULATION WAS USED TO ASSESS EFFECTIVENESS OF THE REINFORCEMENT. ASPHALT-COATED STRANDS PROVIDED MORE EFFECTIVE REINFORCEMENT THAN UNCOATED STRANDS. /AUTHOR/
