'QUICKIE' TEST CATCHES 'OFF-SPEC' ASPHALT

AN ENGINEER AT THE ASPHALT INSTITUTE HAS DEVELOPED A VISCOMETER, WHICH IS A DOUBLE-WALLED CUP WITH A FLOW TUBE CENTERED IN THE INNER CUP, TO TEST FOR OFF SPECIFICATION ASPHALT. THE FLOW TUBE IS DIMENSIONED TO PROVIDE LAMINAR FLOW. VISCOSITY IS DETERMINED BY COMPLETELY IMMERSING THE VISCOMETER IN A SAMPLE OF THE MATERIAL TO BE TESTED, WITHDRAWING IT RAPIDLY AND RECORDING THE TIME REQUIRED FROM THE CUPFUL CONDITION UNTIL AN INDENTATION IS SEEN IN THE ASPHALT ABOVE THE FLOW TUBE. ASPHALT TEMPERATURE IS DETERMINED AT TIME OF TEST. USE OF THE VISCOMETER IS MOST READILY APPLICABLE TO ASPHALTS GRADED BY VISCOSITY. THE VISCOMETER IS A CONVENIENT DEVICE FOR FIELD USE TO DETERMINE EASILY AND QUICKLY IF THE MATERIAL FALLS WITHIN THE PRESCRIBED CONSISTENCY RANGE.
