STATE OF THE ART: EFFECT OF WATER ON BITUMEN - AGGREGATE MIXTURES

A SURVEY IS PROVIDED OF THE EFFECT OF WATER AND MOISTURE ON BITUMINOUS MIXTURES. EXISTING LITERATURE ON THE SUBJECT OF ADHESION AND STRIPPING UP TO THE FIRST HALF OF 1965 IS SUMMARIZED AND EVALUATED. ADHESION OF BITUMINOUS BINDER TO AGGREGATE IS A SURFACE PHENOMENON RELATED TO THE PHYSIO- CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF THE TWO MATERIALS. THE LACK OF ADHESION IN A BITUMINOUS MIXTURE RESULTS FROM EITHER IMPROPER JOINT FORMATION OR STRIPPING OF THE BINDER FROM THE AGGREGATE IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER. THE DETACHMENT MAY BE RELATED TO THE ABSORPTION OF WATER INTO THE AGGREGATE SURFACE STRUCTURE AND CAUSE A RISE IN THE PH VALUE. DETACHMENT TENDS TO OCCUR FROM MINERALS CONTAINING HIGH PROPORTIONS OF QUARTZ AND FELDSPAR. THE PORE WATER PRESSURE BUILT UP IN THE PAVEMENT DUE TO THE DYNAMIC EFFECT OF WHEEL LOAD APPLICATION IS BELIEVED RESPONSIBLE FOR ADHESION TENSION AND INTERFACIAL TENSION FAILURES IN BITUMINOUS MIXTURES. SOME OF THE CONCLUSIONS ARE: SURFACE TEXTURE OF THE AGGREGATE AFFECTS THE WETTABILITY OF THE BINDER, THE BINDER HAS MUCH MORE DIFFICULTY WETTING A ROUGH AGGREGATE SURFACE IN CONTACT WITH WATER THAN IN WETTING A SMOOTH SURFACE, SURFACE DRYNESS OF THE AGGREGATE RESULTS IN THE LEAST DISPLACEMENT OF THE BINDER FROM THE AGGREGATE SURFACE, DUSTY AGGREGATE RETARDS WETTABILITY AND SPREADING OF THE BINDER AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR POOR ADHESION, THE EFFECT OF THE PH OF THE WATER ON THE ADHESION OF THE BINDER TO THE AGGREGATE IS CONTROVERSIAL, DISPLACEMENT OF THE BINDER BY WATER IS OPPOSED BY VISCOSITY, THE WETTING OF AGGREGATE SURFACE IS CONTROLLED LARGELY BY THE VISCOSITY OF THE BINDER, THE SURFACE TENSION OF THE BITUMINOUS MATERIAL IS NOT BELIEVED TO BE A MAJOR FACTOR IN THE WETTABILITY OF DRY AGGREGATE, COMPOSITION OF THE BITUMINOUS BINDER APPEARS TO HAVE SOME SIGNIFICANT EFFECT ON THE ADHESION AND STRIPPING, TEMPERATURE PREVAILING DURING THE MIXING HAS A GREAT INFLUENCE ON ADHESION, MANY PRESENT TEST METHODS RESULTS DO NOT CORRELATE WITH ACTUAL FIELD TEST PERFORMANCE, AND THE STRIPPING RESISTANCE OF BITUMINOUS-AGGREGATE SYSTEMS CAN BE IMPROVED BY USING SURFACE-ACTIVE AGENTS.
