ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: Managing airport installations covers a range of logistic tasks and challenges, which make it possible to realize the inherently vast optimization and cost reduction potential. With regard to both passenger processing and baggage handling, and the provision and disposal logistics in the apron area, opportunities exist for work procedure-related optimization and cost reduction whose potential has not yet been fully recognized. New challenges such as the introduction of widebody jets and increased security requirements - especially in the wake of 11 September 2001 - have to be met by an airport operator with innovative logistic concepts. Any enhanced security arrangements cause changes to the flow of passengers and baggage, while creating bottlenecks in the check-in areas and delays in baggage conveyance. International air transport organizations have agreed on the need for a thorough search of all the checked-in baggage to begin in 2003. This means that additional time has to be spent during the phase of passenger processing, and the resultant delays have to be compensated for by the adoption of suitable logistic procedures. The aim is to bring about the efficient coordination of all these procedures, which includes regulating the flow of passengers inside the airport terminal with the support of automated transport facilities, and adopting new technological means to speed up the transfer of baggage along conveyor belts. By extending the thorough search procedure also to airfreight, new complex equipment to X-ray containers has to be installed. Its integration into the existing infrastructure facilities is necessary while such aspects as architecture and logistics also have to be taken into account. To optimize work process-related logistics within an airport's overall framework for logistics, it is necessary to devise new concepts for speedier baggage conveyance and trans-shipment. (A)
