STATE OF THE ART: SURFACE TREATMENTS-SUMMARY OF EXISTING LITERATURE

PERTINENT INFORMATION RELATING TO SURFACE TREATMENT DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION IS SUMMARIZED. SURFACE TREATMENT AS DEFINED IN THIS PUBLICATION REFERS TO A CLASS OF TREATMENTS THAT RANGE FROM A VERY LIGHT APPLICATION OF LIQUID ASPHALT WITH FINE COVER AGGREGATE TO A MORE SUBSTANTIAL TWO-SHOT SCREENING SEAL TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION. GOOD AND BAD PERFORMANCE OF CONSTRUCTED SURFACE TREATMENTS ARE DISCUSSED. A NUMBER OF FACTORS INFLUENCE THE PERFORMANCE OF SURFACE TREATMENTS. PRIMARILY THEY ARE RELATED TO THE BITUMINOUS BINDER OR TO THE COVER AGGREGATE. SEVERAL KNOWN, CURRENT METHODS OF DESIGN ARE DISCUSSED AND THE LIMITATIONS OF EACH NOTED. A BIBLIOGRAPHY ON SEAL COATS AND SURFACE TREAMENTS IS PRESENTED.
